Website Trends for 2018

January 2, 2018 by anoadmin

In 2017 several website trends caught traction which will remain popular throughout 2018. In the past year, we have noticed a major evolution in the design of small business sites. Cluttered pages, a lack of direction, and M.I.A. contact forms are a thing of the past. The message has been conveyed; business owners are realizing that strong photos, clear messages, and prompt customer service is what makes a positive user experience. A positive experience results in potential customers to stay on a site for longer. Therefore, websites are being designed with a specific goal to convey a clear message and make it as easy as possible for the user. More sites are sticking to a clean site format, incorporating a call to action (CTAs) and chatbots.

Clean Sites and Good Photo Quality

Old City Web Services designs a site that is clear and focused.

This is an example of a site that Old City Web Services redesigned not too long ago. Notice the simple color scheme, clear text, and simplicity of the site.Above all else, a clean and focused website is a top priority for businesses. A cluttered site can be distracting and push potential customers out of your cyber-door. Since sites only have a few seconds to grab the attention of a user, distracting elements like blurry photos, a mismatched color-scheme, and too short or too long of content, is damaging.

Call to Action (CTA)

St. Augustine Record CTA

In this CTA, the St. Augustine Record advertises a local attorneys office. The purpose of a CTA is to prompt the user to take a specific action while on your site. A CTA usually takes the form of a button, link, or pop-up and requests the user to “sign up”, make a purchase, download a coupon, or read more information.

Every site should have a CTA, especially e-commerce sites. They provide a direction for users, measure the success of a site, and let’s not forget they increase conversion. The proof is in the pudding. Nearly every large corporation site has several CTAs and small businesses are following suit in 2018.

CTA’s are for you if you have an e-commerce site, use email as a form of marketing, host events or sales, or provide coupons.

If you are interested in adding a CTA or expanding your current site into an ecommerce site, call us to schedule a free consultation.

Chatbots

Customer service will be more complex than ever in 2018. In the past, customers with an inquiry resorted to dialing a number for a resolution, but in 2018 they will resort to clicking; chatbots are the key to high customer satisfaction.

Consumers are interested in what is most convenient for them and phone calls have become inconvenient. Since users often use the internet and social media pages, such as Facebook, to find information, connecting with them online is more important than ever. Consequently, chatbots are taking the place of phone calls. As you may have noticed on some Facebook Business Pages, it is no longer necessary to dial a number for an answer. Chatbots make it convenient to answer frequently asked questions such as the price of items, event times, locations, and the purchase of tickets. While large enterprises have a customer support person on the other side of their chat box to answer questions, small businesses may not have the manpower to answer individual questions. However, small businesses can rely on chat automation, which provides pre-written responses to FAQ. Chatbots is beneficial for more than just the consumer. In fact, small businesses profit as well because customers are satisfied and better customer data is collected.

The technology behind chatbots is sophisticated but surprisingly inexpensive. Interested in knowing if chatbots are the way to the hearts of your customers? We can help you.

Finding Meaning in Mission Work

July 25, 2017 by anoadmin Leave a Comment

It’s no doubt that we have a talented team here at Old City Web Services, but one of our favorite things about each person on staff is that they all have passions and talents that make them awesome individuals. We’re a family here, and when one of our family members achieves accomplishments, we want to tell the world how proud we are of them!

Cecile Mission Work

Cecile working with the youth. This blog features our President and CEO, Cecile Browning Nusbaum, the backbone of Old City Web Services, Inc. A St. Augustine native, Cecile is extremely passionate about St. Augustine and does everything she can to support our community. When she’s not in the office, Cecile enjoys spending time outside, taking part in community events, working with youth and traveling. Her latest travel adventure, this past June, was a mission trip with church youth to Whitewater Express, a camp in Copperhill, Tennessee.

We asked Cecile a few questions about her latest adventure:

Who went?

I went with the Trinity Episcopal Parish Youth Group. There was a total of 18 of us - 4 adult chaperones and 14 youth. The youth consisted of middle and high school students from various schools in the county.

What made you want to go?

I go on the mission trips for the fulfillment of watching the youth grow, of seeing them step out of their comfort zone to experience something new and realizing what they can achieve. To watch a young person use a power tool for the first time to build or construct something, then to hear them say, "I can do this when I get back home", is very rewarding. I believe I receive more from going on these trips than the youth do sometimes. Watching them interact with each other, you see how they have not developed their own opinions yet and are open to change.

What did you do while you were there?

The team works to remove the old benches.

Last year, the first time we stayed at this camp, we found an outdoor chapel area where we had some of our evening devotions. It is very rustic and peaceful with about twenty benches some of which had started to rot and fall over. There is a stream that wraps around this area underneath the trees with a bridge leading to the chapel area. It had been previously patched and was in need of repairs as well. We decided that rebuilding the benches and bridge would be a great project for us to do and something many others would be able to use for years to come.

I made a trip to the camp about a month prior and videoed the area, measured it, and talked with the camp administrator to come up with a list of materials that we would need.

The wood was delivered to the camp the day before our arrival. We had brought all the necessary tools for the project with us, so we hit the ground running. We removed and replaced most of the benches. And, we built a completely new bridge and walked it into place.

before-after-work

The benches before and after they were replaced. While we were there, the camp had paintball, rock climbing walls, and high ropes and we took part in those. We ziplined, went whitewater rafting, and walked trails outside of the camp.  One of our youth had a fear of heights and decided they were going to conquer their fear there. All of the students knew what we were going to do ahead of time, and I thought it was so interesting to hear and see how this one student overcame their fear.

What are your favorite memories?

IMG_20170601_200527782

Everyone gathers around the campfire for a daily devotion.

Our devotions around the campfire at night was one of my favorite times of the day – listening to the youth talk about what they had done during the day and how we can relate to what God’s plan for us is.

Getting up very early in the morning, breathing in cool mountain morning air, listening to the birds, watching the sun rise over the mountain tops as the fog clears, absorbing everything around me was incredible.

One of the best things was seeing the youth unplug from their devices. They played Frisbee golf, taught each other card games, or if one of them had something that would benefit the group, they would share it. This year, one of the youth shared how he uses martial arts and how you don’t have to use it physically to take yourself out of situations that may arise.

What is your favorite part of going on mission trips?

DSC02214

I’ve been going on mission trips with our church since 2007. I love being able to take time off and connect with tools other than a computer. To teach a student how to use a power tool for the first time. To watch a group of young adults build something and when they are done to be able to give it to the person, persons, or group they built it for. To listen to them while we are building and having them come up with a better way to do it. To have the youth suggest that we add things to our projects and let them lead their project. To see them interact with the people they are helping and between each other. The encouragement they give each other when someone might be afraid to do something. To watch our youth grow physically and spiritually over the years.

What would you tell anyone thinking of going on a mission trip?

I would say that going on a mission trip with youth is the most incredible thing that you can do. To see how they grow and overcome obstacles and getting to know them in a totally different setting from home is so uplifting. I know not all mission trips have devotions in the evenings, but it’s great to listen to each one of them tell about their day and how things are provided for them.

For me, it is a time I can detach from my everyday life and reflect. Sometimes you have an impact on a student and you don’t even know it. I had a student that was watching when I didn’t know it. I had no idea she knew that I got up before everyone else to do my devotions. It keeps me young at heart and on my toes. And most of all don’t forget to take air freshener; those cabins get pretty stinky after a week!

Google Devalues Link-building Tactics

August 21, 2013 by anoadmin

For years, SEO professionals have emphasized the importance of increasing the number of external in-bound links to a site in an effort to build authority and trust, hence boosting organic search rankings. One by one, Google has been devaluing these tactics. What does this mean for your website? These changes will remove value that your site previously enjoyed by means Google classifies as unnatural. Below, we've included three devalued link building tactics from Google's latest link scheme guidelines:

  • Large-scale article marketing or guest posting campaigns with keyword-rich anchor text links.
  • Advertorials or advertising where payment is received for articles that include links that pass PageRank.
  • Links with optimized anchor text in articles or press releases distributed on other sites.

Feeling overwhelmed or possibly scared that your company's website may be affected by Google's ever-changing algorithms? Are you 100% certain your site is optimized organically? Don't fret! Let the professionals that specialize in organic SEO and SEM maintain and monitor your website's rankings so that it won't be devalued because of new policies. For more information, contact us today by giving us a call: 904.829.2772 or emailing us: letusmarketyou@oldcity.com.

What is RSS and is it still important?

June 26, 2013 by anoadmin Leave a Comment

What does RSS stand for? It stands for Really Simple Syndication. Now you're probably saying to yourself, "Okay, but what is it?" Here's our simple answer: RSS feeds gives readers a method to keep up with their favorite blogs, online news and any other favorite websites. Anyone can choose the sites they wish to subscribe to and then receive updates in one centralized location. In essence, RSS allows content to come to you. Pretty neat idea huh?

How can RSS feeds help your business? Simple-- If you're a website owner or blogger, RSS is a means to gain a loyal following of internet users. It helps grow your website by keeping you in the forefront of readers mind while they're browsing their feed. As a small business, you may not update your web content as often as you should or you may choose not maintain a blog, however RSS just gives you more of a reason to do just that. You can track how many users subscribe to your feeds and focus your messages on what they want to hear.

If you sell products online, RSS will allow consumers to stay up-to-date on your newest items and specials. Who knows--these subscribers may likely be your next in-store customer! If you are a travel blogger, RSS will allow people to subscribe to your posts and increase your number of readers. If you post upcoming events, news or press releases on your site, RSS feeds will allow subscribers to view this content every time you update it.

Users can sign-up for your feeds using multiple platforms such as Google Reader, My Yahoo and various mobile apps.

Need help setting up RSS feeds on your website or blog? Old City Web Services offers training services that will teach you how to set up your very own RSS feed system to best suit your business. Students from FSDB Visit & Learn with Old City Web Services

March 12, 2012 by anoadmin Leave a Comment

Being a small town marketing firm is about more than just offering services and assistance to our local business community. We also believe in giving back to the St. Augustine community whenever and wherever possible. Recently, our interactions with our community have been focused on educating students in the area about real world career opportunities in the marketing and design industries.

Last year, we had the opportunity to partner with Pedro Menendez High School to help their digital design students learn more about the real world careers available to them in the design industry. The students designed a campaign to promote their school and invited us to join them in the classroom for a constructive evaluation of their work. We were very impressed with their designs! We also shared some copy writing advice with Menendez Yearbook students who were working on creating captions and body copy for the school's annual book.

After such a wonderful experience with Menendez, we were thrilled when the Florida School for the Deaf & Blind here in St. Augustine asked if some of their students could visit our offices to learn more about marketing. The group of budding young designers, computer experts and marketing strategists joined us in the office on March 9th to learn more about what we do for our clients and how they can start their career path in the industry.

OCWS owner Cecile Nusbaum told the students about her experience and how important it is to keep your mind open to new ideas and opportunities. Marketing coordinator Shannon O'Neil showed the students examples of the branding work OCWS has done for clients like Jack Ward Fire, Little Looster, and the Chicago Bears. Bobby Jones, OCWS Art Director, gave the students an idea of the kind of programs, computers and other technology tools we use to create our work.

After a short presentation, the students were eager to ask questions about internships, teamwork and the reach of Old City Web Services. We provided some additional answers before taking the students on a tour of our offices.

It was a wonderful morning for us, we enjoyed it just as much as the students did. Since the meeting we have kept in touch with the students and their teachers with the hope of furthering our connection in the future.
