Out with the old…in with the New

June 6, 2013 by anoadmin Leave a Comment

How can you really tell if your marketing efforts are outdated? We've developed a simple check list to help you determine if how you're running your small (or big) business is in-line with the newest technology and innovative marketing trends. Note: If you answer "Yes" to any of these categories below, pick up the phone and contact us today--we're here to help!

  • You don't remember what your website looks like....if you can no longer remember the details of what your site looks like, then it is safe to say that you haven't visited your own website in a while--quite possibly a long while and I bet it could use some major updating! Ask yourself: What images are on my homepage? What pages are included in my navigation? Here are a few more key signs your site is outdated:
    • You have a starburst on your site
    • Your color palette includes fluorescents
    • There is not a functioning navigation
    • You have broken links
    • You cannot view your site from an iPhone or iPad
  • You lost rankings when Google Places was launched...Google launched a game-changing search process in 2011 called Google Places. In order to capture more of the lucrative local search audience, Google started to integrate places results with organic rankings (rather than simply showing a map with markers). What does this mean for your SEO? Google Places listings can dominate the entire first page of search results pushing the link to your company's website further down the list.
  • The administrator of your company Facebook page is no longer with the company...if you no longer remember the logins to your company's social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter or otherwise), you're officially outdated. Even if your Facebook page looks nice and people continue to interact with it, you're still missing the ball by not engaging with your consumers. Social media might not generate the same ROI as traditional direct response channels, but that doesn't mean there is no value.
  • Your search traffic directs to your homepage...if you are not using landing pages to create cohesive campaigns, you can guarantee users are bouncing off your site as fast as they arrive. You can do all the keyword research you want, but if you aren't using landing pages that are aligned with your keyword approach, you're not running an effective end-to-end paid search campaign. When paying for online ads or promotions, it's important to consider the path your users are taking to convert.
  • You're not taking advantage of online advertising...small businesses have a tremendous resource at their disposal: the internet. Without a doubt, the internet provides the best forum for small business advertising. Here are a few reasons why entrepreneurs should look toward the internet to advertise their business:
    • More and more consumers look to the internet for their purchasing-it's convenient, fast and online sales are generating billions of dollars each year.
    • The Internets scope is world-wide--businesses can expand their customer base across the globe and customers can make purchases anytime, anywhere 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
    • There is a wide variety of internet ad options-banner ads, promotional, newsletter, social media, audio/video...just to name a few!

Keeping a marketing plan fresh by adding or adjusting key ingredients is a constant and timely job and unfortunately it is not always made a top priority for many small businesses. Why not make the step in the right direction today by letting Old City Web Services and OldCity.com help turn your marketing efforts around? After all, we're a local, small business too! The difference is we specialize in web development, internet advertising and integrated marketing...and we love what we do! Secrets to being seen online

May 8, 2013 by anoadmin Leave a Comment

Maybe you just redesigned your website with an eye-catching design, innovative components and you're confident that it is informational, looks great and really sets you apart from competition. Now ask yourself-- are people (the right people) finding my fabulous new site? Having a new website is great, but it's just not enough...now you need your potential customers to find you and find you fast and easy.

First and foremost, make sure you're listed with the top 3 search engines-- Google, Bing and Yahoo! Search. If these 3 cannot find you, then you can almost guarantee your online visibility is at an all time low. Google alone has an estimated 900,000,000 Unique Monthly Visitors compared to Bing's estimated 165,000,000 and Yahoo's 160,000,000.

Maintain, Maintain, Maintain...If you don't have a monthly retainer for maintaining and improving your SEO (getting a high listing for any given search result), then the minute you decide to stop--your listing results will stop. There is nothing more exciting then appearing in the top 3 results in a Google search for your primary key-phrase, but then again there is nothing more disappointing then dropping to the third page a month later.

Make sure your website design is search engine-friendly...not only should you be on-top of SEO when it comes to search engines and relative content, but many people don't realize that the website design itself may be preventing you from gaining the online visibility you desire. Just remember--no frames and limited (if any) flash and java content.

For more tips on how Old City Web Services can help you be better seen online, give us a call: 904.829.2772 or email us: letusmarketyou@oldcity.com to schedule your free one-hour consultation.

The Importance of Ongoing Optimization

April 12, 2013 by anoadmin Leave a Comment

A common question we often hear is: When is my site optimized? The best answer: It's an ongoing process. With this being said, constant SEO and SEM modification will lead you to a more optimized site. It is important to invest in ongoing Optimization in order to reach your ultimate goal of the moment where every page, text, image and call-to-action is perfectly aligned with the wants and needs of your audience.

Here is a list of SEO/SEM services we recommend be a part of your ongoing optimization process:

Fluctuations in keyword/key-phrase demand: Say your website is 5 years old, key words and key-phrases that were rarely used in 2008 may be highly used across the web today. For example, the exact phrase 'content marketing' was unknown to many 5 years ago, but now can be found on over 4 million web pages, including over 2 million blog posts. This validates the importance of constantly researching and updating your keyword glossary based on new keywords and search trends.

Modified user preferences: Frequently reviewing your Google Analytics and being able to fully understand the stats will help narrow down where on your site people tend to go and what they are doing once they are there. Try plugging in a key-phrase into Google, Bing and Yahoo....what type of content do you see? Maybe there are lots of videos at the top of the results or info-graphics and visuals. This would indicate that video and images are resonating with your audience.

Social Updates: From Facebook to Pinterest to Google+, one thing is guaranteed-- there will always be a new social network. With every social update comes an opportunity to reevaluate your content. After determining where your target audience is socializing online, you can create a compelling user experience within that network.

So, how often do you need ongoing optimization? The simple answer is, it all depends. Whether it's monthly, semi-monthly or quarterly, you should first have a professional do the preliminary research. Our SEO/SEM team always completes an initial analysis of your site prior to giving recommendations. This will determine your specific needs and establish an ongoing optimization schedule that's suited best for your business.

Let Old City Web Services help you improve your site's optimization by conducting an Initial Analysis and Evaluation to determine your specific business needs. Give us a call: 904.829.2772 or email us: letusmarketyou@oldcity.com to set up your free consultation!

The Importance of SEO Maintenance

January 16, 2013 by anoadmin Leave a Comment

Your website is an important component of your business and it's crucial for you to be found on search engines. SEO is not a one-time service, rather an ongoing process that businesses must monitor & maintain. Think of it as an investment, the more you put into your SEO rankings, the more traffic & visibility your website will gain! Here's a brief list of why SEO should be maintained by a professional:

Search engines are constantly changing their search algorithms... A perfect example of this is the Google Panda Update when "Google took action against content farms that were gaining top listings with 'shallow' or 'low-quality' content" effecting approximately 12% of search results in the US alone.

Search engines tweak the Search Engine Results Page (SERP)... In 2007, Google announced their Universal Search which blended users' search results with images, videos, blogs, books, news etc., ultimately pushing websites further down the page.

Competitors try to and WILL outrank you... If you rank above your key competition, they will take notice and they will take measures to outrank you, most likely by hiring an SEO specialist to improve their content and back-links.

Many companies don't actively or effectively use Analytics on their own... Many business owners have the stats at their fingertips, however it's knowing (& finding the time!) how to analyze them to prove & improve R.O.I. Companies that invest in ongoing SEO consulting are putting themselves way ahead of the competition by allowing the company to focus on its core skills and relying on the SEO professional to do what they do best.

Old City Web Services offers a plethora of SEO and SEM (Search Engine Marketing) services including four different plan levels. We work with our clients on an individual basis to recommend which level will work best for their business, based on their needs and the competition in their industry.

If you are interested in improving your search rankings, give us a call: 904.829.2772 or e-mail us: letusmarketyou@oldcity.com.

How to Monitor your Organic Traffic

December 14, 2012 by anoadmin Leave a Comment

Measuring organic website traffic is a crucial role for any SEO or SEM specialist. Google Analytic's is one of the web's most popular tools for measuring & analyzing website traffic. What's its best feature...? It's free!

Google Analytics shows you the keywords people searched for that led them to your site via the organic search results--the traffic that comes from Google or Bing that you've not paid for. Hint: To check your traffic, click "Traffic Sources," "Sources," "Search," then select "Organic."

Why is this information helpful to you? It tells you how many people are searching for you by name and what stage of the buying cycle they're in when they get to your site. If people are searching more general terms of products or services (i.e. "Places to stay in St. Augustine"), this tells you the customer is still shopping around and most likely looking at your competitors sites also! Hint: This is why it's key to have a professional looking website that is organically optimized by an SEO/SEM specialist! You'll also notice that these searches are constantly changing over time.

The "Queries" section of Google Analytics will tell you the reaction people have to your site within their search results. Queries will tell you the number of people that saw your site pop up and the percentage that actually clicked on your link--this is called the click-through rate. Hint: Take in mind that these stats are estimations...not exact numbers.

Lastly, take notice of the specific pages people arrive at when they go to your site your site (i.e. contact, blog, photo gallery). Hint: These are called "landing pages" for that reason! Google Analytics allows you to monitor the rankings of each landing page therefore the higher the ranking for your landing pages=more traffic to your site.

Need help monitoring your organic traffic or worried your site is not keeping potential customers engaged? We can help! Let Old City Web Services track your organic traffic and help improve your overall rankings!

SEO vs. SEM: What are they and what can they do for you?

September 5, 2012 by anoadmin Leave a Comment

Search Engine Optimization is...

...adding keywords and phrases to your website content, titles and descriptions in order to make your website appeal more to search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing. Combined with other SEO strategies like link building, social media, blogs, etc. search engine optimization can help your website move up in the rankings and reach more people searching for your services or products.

Search Engine Marketing is...

...purchasing ad space on search engine websites including the "sponsored links" area at the top of most search results and the advertising spots that appear in the sidebar. This is an advanced type of advertising because you can pick specific keywords and limit the amount of money you spend by paying for each click the ad receives.

What can SEO and SEM do for you?

Both strategies are great for improving your website traffic, but combining the two can sometimes be the best way to get the most bang for your buck. SEO rankings appear to potential customers to be unbiased suggestions from the search engines where SEM are still advertisements that some customers might not be as inclined to click on.

However, SEM ads are guaranteed spots and though you have to pay more for more competitive terms, it's an assured way to get your website seen by more people. SEO on the other hand takes longer to build your rankings and nothing is guaranteed.

Confused? Don't worry! We can help.

Old City Web Services is here to keep you from going crazy trying to sort through the best strategy for your business.

Call or email us to set up an evaluation of your website with our Search Engine Specialist. This detailed analysis for just $150 includes a review of your website, relevant search terms, inbound links, and other elements that contribute to your search rankings.

Based on our research, we can identify a strategy that will work best for your company to improve website traffic and in turn boost your business.

The Value of Google Analytics

June 6, 2012 by anoadmin Leave a Comment

Get to know the people who are visiting your website.

Have you ever wondered how many people visit your website? How long do they stay on the website? What pages do they visit? How did they find your website?

Google Analytics can answer all of these questions! This incredible program is free to use and tracks nearly every statistic imaginable about your website, including:

  • Number of visits and unique visits your website receives
  • Average length of time spent on your website
  • Average number of pages viewed by each visitor
  • The most visited pages on your website
  • The number of mobile visitors your site receives
  • Keywords used most often to find your website
  • Geographic location & primary language of your visitors

What can you do with this information?

The information Google Analytics provides is very valuable to your business. Understanding your current website traffic and how visitors are using your website will help you improve your site and, as a result, increase your traffic.

As an example, you might discover that 80% of visitors enter your website on the About Us page and never make it to your home page. Knowing this would help you tailor the text and photos on your About Us page to provide essential information that might currently be on the Home page. You could also restructure your website to help guide users to other pages to be sure they are finding all the information about your business that they need.

Let Google Analytics show you the return on your advertising investments.

Google Analytics can tell you what other websites are sending traffic to your website. This is incredibly valuable information if you've purchase online advertising because you can see exactly what kind of return you're receiving on your investment. You may find that ads on certain websites are sending you a lot of traffic, while ads on other websites are not benefiting your business. This information will help you to make wise decisions when it comes to online advertising.

We can add Google Analytics to your website!

If you don't have Google Analytics installed on your website yet, let us add it for you! For just $20, we can get everything set-up so you can start tracking your traffic. There is no monthly or recurring cost, just the set-up fee and you're on your way!
